DESCRIPTION:

One of the hallmarks of the aging experience is change.  The Aging Issues Committee (AIC) invites you to join us for a series of six Zoom luncheon presentations/discussions on the subject of Later Life Transitions.  Each session will be led by one or two members of the Committee and will vary in format. Sessions will be scheduled on Fridays at noon and will be at least one month apart.  Topics include:

1.) Retirement

2.) Loss of Physical Capabilities (Including Driving)

3.) Moving to a Senior Facility

4.) Becoming Caregiver to a Family Member

5.) Loss of a Spouse/Partner

6.) The Final Transition

In this fourth session of the series, Drs. Coburn and Dellefield will discuss the experiences of older adults who find themselves unexpectedly in roles of caregiver to family members and the challenges they face.  Dr. Dellefield will describe research related to the impact on older adults that take on these responsibilities; to their health, their emotional well-being and their finances.  He will also discuss current social/economic changes to have increased the necessity for older adults become caregivers.  Dr. Coburn will give us personal insights from her experiences as a caregiver to her dear husband and bring us into the very highs and lows that characterize life for those in her situation.  Afterwards, Drs. Coburn and Dellefield will write an article summarizing the information and discussion for publication in the Aging Issues Committee newsletter, Age in Action.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) - This luncheon series qualifies for CPD Learning Category #2 - Academic  Self-Directed Learning for California licensed psychologists.  It also meets criteria for Cultural Diversity and/or Social Justice requirements.
