RIDING THE WAVE: USING MENTAL IMAGERY TO HEAL TRAUMA - 4 CEs

Michelle Warfield, Ph.D. Creative Imagination Specialist

Trauma research shows us that traumatic experience affects the mind, brain, and body. Further, Affective Neuroscience research indicates the relationship between the brain, thoughts, and emotion. This research highlights the need for trauma treatment interventions to be integrative, holistic, and flexible, and uniquely tailored to each individual’s presented needs on the continuum of trauma treatment. It also underscores the need to include trauma treatment interventions that will serve to heal the mind, emotions, and body; and contribute to brain functioning which supports emotional regulation. The use of Mental Imagery is a mindful, cognitive technique that when practiced with safety and relaxation and a few other prerequisites, can transform depression, anxiety, physical pain, and relationship difficulties; and contributes to integrated emotional, mental, physical, social balance and psychological health.

This workshop is designed to help you:

1.     Summarize Affective Neuroscience research findings that show the relationship between thoughts, brain, and emotion.
2.     Identify what the trauma literature tells us about the effect of traumatic experience on the mind, brain, and body
3.     Discuss the benefits of Mental Imagery in the process of healing from trauma.
4.     Identify technique for the application of Mental Imagery in the treatment of trauma, including the use of guided and discovered images, and the altering of distressing images.
5.     Demonstrate through participation in a guided imagery group exercise where you will discover, see, and sense your own images, to be followed by group discussion of your individual experience of images.
